So explain - what has any of that to do with a 'Pagoda SL', Bullitt, a '390 big-block Ford Mustang GT or any McQueen movies?
Still, thanks for the photo of the girl bending over......Anyway, have fun.

Chris,

The "big blocked Bullit Mustang" had nothing to do with the right answer, it was meant to make it harder, see following a definition I found on the web about cryptic clues.

The Golden Rule for setting a good cryptic clue was laid down by Ximenes of the Observer, the late DS McNutt (1902-71): "I may not mean what I say, but I must say what I mean."

A cryptic clue is trying to lead you off in the wrong direction. You need to deconstruct the clue and concentrate on the separate parts. Don't get sidetracked by punctuation and the use of capital letters - they are designed to mislead you.

Hope you all enjoyed the "chase" and that the weather is kind and the camera in focus on the day of the flight, a blue Pagoda and a silver P51-D [Mustang] sounds like a good combination to me.

Now if someone can find me a B17 that's also on my "bucket list".

All good fun!
Enjoy the adrenalin fix.
I still can't connect your clues though, 'cryptic' or otherwise, and I used to do The Times crossword daily (Pommie paper, best crossword) and I am know they can be tricky, but not misleading.?!?!?
Meanwhile Biggles,
if you feel like a drive south at the end of the month I can recommend the H.A.R.S. annual show at Illawarra Regional Airport, Albion Park.
Lots of rare birds in flight, including 'Connie' which I believe is the only surviving Constellation still flying. Great vintage car and 'bike show on the ground too, in fact I may post details of this separately as an event worth checking out.
Feb 28th, or go to;

Chris,
Thanks for the invite, sounds like a great gig, if you can get them to postphone it [fat chance ] till the weekend of the 22 nd. of March I'd probably be in it.
Having spent 5 years of my teens in the Air Force Cadets and had my first trip upstairs was in a two seat RAAF Vampire classic cars are not my only passion, unfortunately the winged variety are way outside my financial limits.
I see you own one of what I consider the two best designed and built Benz's, a 450 SLC the other being the 560 SEC, hope it's with you for a long time.
I'm surprised as a "crossworder" you don't dig cryptic questions, they are supposed to be deliberately missleading.

Gate Crasher,

There's a rumour going around that Big Matt, Club Mag. Edt. is trying to gate crash our Mustang Party at Noosa on the 15 th.
I'm told he's been trying to organise a ride in a two seat FA-18. Trouble is the pilots reccon with all that extra weight in the back seat the 18 would have trouble catching up with a Wirraway let along a Mustang P51-D.
Stick to Hercs Matt but don't go standing on the rear door/ramp during flight.

No, cryptic clues should be obscure, requiring one to unravel the possibilities, but not misleading. As I said, your reference to McQueen and Bullitt had no bearing on the answer.
Meanwhile, I will try to find some good examples from The Times' crossword, they might amuse a few in a new thread just for fun.
Have a good time, Mustang or FA-18, either would be a blast, but Hercules look a bit heavy and slow. I never got past my basic single engine PPL in England (and chickened out of a trial helicopter lesson), but I may yet take it up again here, there is a good flying school and club at Albion Park, I would be interested in trying twins if I can afford to put in the hours.

"

The proof of the pudding is in......."

There are definately times when a Mustang is preferable to a Pagoda, 24 hours after our sortie over Noosa River my feet have not yet touched the ground.
35 minutes in this Anglo / American Masterpiece with a very competent jockey in comand kills all the memories of being behind the wheel of a real 300SL Gullwing, 6.3, GTHO, SL600 and all other go fast buggies I've driven.
A climbing stall turn over Laguna Bay, followed by a diving run over the Coast Guard Tower at the entrence to Noosa River and a fast barrel roll on the way back to Caboolture Airport, it really dosn't get any better than that.
Anyone interested in hiring the P51-D Mustang see www.mustangflights.com

Man I so wish I was there what a buzz it would have been. Years ago I got a ride in an F111 from Brisbane to Sydney I have never forgotten that relentless motion forward, but it could never have the character the old girls have. The editor is awaiting the full story for publication my friend!
